The Best Thermal Springs in Tuscany

Tuscany is graced with some of the best natural hot springs in the world. The baths were first revered by the Romans who realized their health benefits. At the time, people from all over surrounding areas would travel to immerse themselves in the healing waters of these thermal pools.  This included popes and nobility who would often vacation near the springs. Today, visitors from all over the world flock to Italy’s thermal springs seeking relaxation, rejuvenation and health.

Visiting any of the baths is a unique experience. The waters that flow from the springs are rich in sulfur and have a potent scent, but it is quickly eclipsed by feelings of warmth and relaxation that envelop both body and mind. For those really looking to indulge, nearby spas offer comprehensive health and beauty treatments. With so many natural thermal springs & spas in Italy, here are our top recommendations:

Saturnia

Italy’s most famous thermal spring dating back 3,000 years is located in Saturnia, Tuscany. Savor a natural treat - Saturnia’s thermal springs are completely free to visit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Here, you can relax and soak in mineral dense water that is 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

For some added pampering, book an appointment at the spa resort nearby, which offers a range of beauty and wellness treatments. We recommend any of the thermal mud treatments followed by a long and relaxing massage.

Enjoy the peaceful baths of Saturnia during sunset or sunrise when the baths are most quiet. If possible, we recommend visiting off season.  There is nothing better than sinking into warm cascading water on a chilly day. Whenever you decide to visit, the relaxing sound of the powerful waterfall will muffle the talking that you would normally hear around you.

Where is Saturnia located?

Saturnia is located less than 3 miles outside the town of Saturnia and 1.5 miles from the Terme di Saturnia Resort. There is no public transportation, so you will need either a rental car or a driver to arrive there. If you plan on driving yourself use the following address in your GPS:

Strada Provinciale di Follonata 58014 Manciano, Grosseto Italia

Alternatively, you can search in Google Maps for “Cascate del Mulino”. Do not search for “Saturnia” as this will take you to the town itself.

2. Bagni San Filippo

The springs at San Filippo offer a unique view in a natural setting. Surrounded by woods in the Val D’Orcia, the experience of bathing here is other-worldly. You will find a clear path runs along a river in the woods, providing access for wayfaring travelers in need of rejuvenation.

Similar to Saturnia hot springs, Bagni San Filippo is completely free.  Follow the path further into the woods, and you will find a massive formation of calcium known as the “White Whale”. Continue past this fascinating setting and you'll reach countless natural pools. Nearby, you can visit a paid spa. In addition to exquisite treatments, you can shower before heading out to dinner in the nearby town.

3. Bagno Vignoni

Located in the middle of a Renaissance era piazza, Bagno Vignoni is unique. The piazza is built directly over the naturally flowing hot springs, which are the hottest in all of Tuscany, reaching temperatures of 125 degrees Fahrenheit.

Over the years, Bagno Vignoni has had some historically famous guests including Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo the Magnificent, who regularly frequented the public bath.  Today, you cannot bathe directly in the square, but you can follow the small canals to the left of the piazza, and take the path downhill to reach a large open hot spring - or grab a gelato in town before heading out to dip your toes in one of the small canals.
