Madrid is a cosmopolitan city offering a wealth of attractions. Choices include world-class art museums — Museo del Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen. Lively plazas line the streets, and impressive buildings such as the Palacio Real are found throughout the city.
The villa is northwest of the city in the charming town of San Lorenzo del Escorial.
Once the hunting and playing grounds of kings, the area offers cool breezes in
the summer because of its proximity to the mountains. Nearby are facilities for
golf and a river for fishing. Escorial's main attraction is a large Palace and
monastery complex built by Felipe II to celebrate his victory over the French;
it is one of the most impressive buildings in Spain. Madrid is just an hour away
by train (40 minutes by bus). Toledo, Cuenca, Avila and Segovia Aranjuez are within
easy daytrip distance.
San Lorenzo is a luxury villa in an exclusive and beautiful
neighborhood. The historic San Lorenzo monastery is a ten-minute walk from the
villa, as is downtown San Lorenzo, with its own royal theater, summer outdoor
opera, and wonderful restaurants such as the famous Charoles or Las Viandas. A
two minute walk will bring you to wonderful trails for hiking and biking at Monte
Cerrado el Romeral, which connect to the trails of the Abantos hills.
San
Lorenzo is a spacious stone house (900 square meters) surrounded by terraced gardens. Inside the sunny villa, tasteful and eclectic artwork and furnishings make it a warm and welcoming house. We think San Lorenzo is a wonderful choice for families with children or groups of friends traveling together because of its proximity to many of Spain's cultural highlights.
Enter the house through an antique carved door into a vestibule with a powder room on the right. The living room has a fireplace, with French doors leading to the glassed-in sun porch, which is heated and can be used year round. A table with 8 chairs is a perfect spot for breakfast. An antique table in the dining room seats 16 guests with ease. The large open kitchen is fully equipped and has seating for 8 at the marble top table. Just off the kitchen is another half bath. The laundry room is downstairs as well as two shower rooms to use after swimming.
On the second floor are four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The master suite (queen bed) has two full bathrooms. Two single bedrooms share a bathroom, and the guest room (double bed) has a bath in the hall. Upstairs, on the third floor, is an artists' studio, a single bedroom, two double bedrooms, and a bathroom. The bedrooms are air conditioned, but other rooms are not, which is what we mean by partial air conditioning. Most rooms without air conditioning, have overhead fans.
Come home from a day of exploring and relax by the swimming pool
or enjoy the splendid views over the gardens to the mountains of the Sierra de
Madrid. Amenities at San Lorenzo include satellite TV with DVD player, stereo, and high
speed Internet access.
The pool can be heated at extra cost. There is a little cottage in the garden that is used as a summer living room, with a ping pong table. Bicycles are available for guests' use.
