Fontclara, a small village with a number of outdoor restaurants, is conveniently
located near the beaches and port towns of Palamos, Palafrugell, and Begur. Bisbal,
known for its colorful pottery, and Figueres, home of the Dali Museum, are also
within easy reach. The walled city of Girona has a Gothic quarter, a cathedral,
wonderful gardens and a famous Jewish quarter to explore. The Romanesque monastery
of Sant Pere de Rodes is nearby in Port de la Selva. Golf is available in the
vicinity, and water sports like scuba and sailing can be found in Estarlit. The
area offers wonderful routes for biking, and the owner of Casa Araceli will provide
guests with bicycles to use. El Bulli, a world-renowned restaurant (reserve up
to a year in advance), and El Celler de San Roc offer visitors the opportunity
to sample traditional foods of the area. Around the corner is small store selling
fresh bread and basic items.
Casa Araceli is a typical farmhouse, built
in 1764, which has been renovated and divided into four apartments. Two of the
apartments have two bedrooms, (one with matrimonial bed and one twin) and two
bathrooms; two have two bedrooms (matrimonial and twin) and one bathroom. The
owner has given great attention to every detail. The apartments are new inside
and yet are in keeping with the traditional farmhouse style. Even the doors are
old and hung on sliding rods. The colors are muted and restful.
One enters
Casa Araceli through a large glass door into a sunny great room, where two couches
face a fireplace. A flat screen TV hides in a corner. The rustic dining table
is made of dark wood and seats up to eight people, and a glass door opens onto
a terrace that is furnished with table, chairs, and an umbrella, where one can
relax or enjoy a meal. Adjacent to the terrace is a grassy area with a swing set
to entertain children, and there are bicycles in the shed for guests to use. The
kitchen is fully equipped and ultra modern, with all appliances concealed. The
stove is electric, the fridge oversized, and conveniences like a microwave and
washing machine have been provided. Upstairs, a small hallway overlooks
a field. Under the window is a perch with seats for two. The owner explained that
originally one seat was for a girl awaiting her lover, while the second seat was
for her chaperone. The cozy bedrooms have original wooden beamed ceilings and
twin beds, with bedspreads made of gorgeous cotton fabrics. Each bedroom has a
TV (Spanish channels). Windows overlook the courtyard or the adjoining fields.
The bathrooms are new, with old-fashioned tubs and ultra-modern fixtures. The
charming owners live on the property and are available to greet you when you arrive
and help make you comfortable during your stay.
