TORINO 2006: THE

- Torino hosts the
20th Olympic Winter Games February 10-26, 2006.
- The
Olympic torch will be lit November 27 in Athens and will travel 1,234 miles throughout
Greece for 10 days before it is handed to Italian organizers for the flight to
Rome on December 7. In Italy, the torch relay will last 64 days and will cover
almost 7,000 miles, passing through each region of Italy before arriving in Torino
on February 10.
- Olympic-style
games for athletes with disabilities were first organized in Rome in 1960. Now
called Paralympics, the sporting event is for athletes from six different disability
groups and is held in the same year and at the same venue as the Olympics.

The
Olympics aren't just for sports enthusiasts! Another Olympic competition is designed
to challenge the world's top chefs. Every four years, thousands of the world's
top chefs compete in the International Culinary Olympics held in Erfurt, Germany.
