Kit at Villa Lante, Lazio

Dear Friends,

Couples often call with a classic dilemma - She wants to see everything; he wants to relax. Where should they go?

The marvelous rural area north of Rome, featured in this newsletter, is the perfect choice. It amazes me how close to Rome this ancient countryside begins. People in the know cherish Northern Lazio and Southern Umbria for its exquisite beauty, central location, art, and archaeological treasures. Good highways cross the region, and so does the main train line between Rome and Florence, making it easy to find excitement in Rome or relax in a timeless landscape of windswept canyons and rolling hills, dotted with castles and medieval hill towns. NEWS FROM DOORWAYS

HEAVENLY COFFEE AT THE VATICAN
VATICAN CITY - Tourists can refresh themselves at a new coffee bar on the roof of St. Peter's. The bar has no name, but an Italian newspaper dubbed it "The Holy Apostolic Cafeteria." A double espresso should provide enough energy to tackle the 349 steps to the top of Michelangelo's dome. On the way down, stop for soft drinks or ice cream. Enjoy a view of St. Peter's from the Forum Apartment, or stay at the Via Duilio Apartment, just a 15-minute walk from the Vatican.

MOLECULAR CUISINE ON LAKE COMO
BELLAGIO - The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni's Mistral Restaurant in Bellagio, Lake Como, has been awarded a star in the 2005 Michelin Guide for its unique seven-course menu of molecular cuisine, combining science and gastronomy. This item brings together two of our interests: in June we spotlighted The Italian Lake District; our March issue featured an article on techno-cuisine in Catalonia.

NEW PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS
STATE DEPARTMENT - Passports will be required for U.S. citizens traveling to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada. Travel between the United States and U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands) will not be affected; however, a passport will be required for travel to the British Virgin Islands. Make sure your passport is up to date before vacationing at spectacular Steele Point Estates on Tortola, B.V.I.
