Dear Friends,

When I am traveling in Italy, I often experience a feeling of déjà vu. This overwhelming sense of familiarity makes me wonder - am I the only one who sees these beautiful views and senses that I have seen it all before?

Then I realize that I actually have seen it before, as beloved films replay themselves before my eyes. The hills of Chianti…the climb up Cortona…the tiny piazze and alleyways of Rome…turquoise seas viewed from cliffside walks along the Amalfi drive…the Greek Theatre and Mount Etna on Sicily - all are pictured in some of my favorite films.

Loving Italy as I do, I sprint to the movies each time a new film is released that might have even a hint of Italian scenery. I can readily forgive a lesser plot in exchange for the opportunity to travel to Italy, even if only in my mind's eye. Good Italian food is like that, too; don't you think? But that is for another time, and another newsletter.

Last summer, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and several other members of the cast of Oceans Twelve were spotted by Doorways' customers while filming on location in Paris and Rome. I thought that it might be fun to reminisce with you about some memorable scenes from movies filmed in Europe, and to invite you to star in your own cinematic adventure by experiencing a similar setting in one of our scenic villas. It's even better to live the experience than to view it.

Here are some of my favorite European films, and the Doorways staff picks. We would like to hear from you and to learn about some of your perfect movie settings, too!

Kit Burns

While filming Much Ado About Nothing, Emma Thompson and Kenneth Brannaugh stayed at Savignola Paolina, an apartment on a wine estate represented by Doorways. When you sign the guest book, your comments will be right beside theirs.

A Doorways customer spotted George Clooney and Brad Pitt at the Hotel de Russie last summer while the two actors were in Rome filming Oceans Twelve. During their stay, an overzealous hotel doorman turned the actors away, mistaking them for vagrants after they returned from jogging in the rain. The same customers, later in their trip, found themselves sitting next to Frances Mayes, author of Under the Tuscan Sun, in a restaurant near Cortona.

If you visit Italy's Lake District, you might be lucky enough to see George Clooney. He owns a villa in Laglio, near Lake Como.

The term "paparazzi" comes from La Dolce Vita. Marcello's photographer friend was named Paparazzo (sparrow) because Fellini thought the photographers hovering around the celebrities looked like hungry birds.

The title role of Amélie was originally meant for Emily Watson, but she declined because she didn't speak French and had already agreed to play the head housemaid in Gosford Park.

When filming Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn was unable to produce the necessary tears for her good-bye scene with Gregory Peck. When the director berated her about the number of wasted takes, Hepburn burst into tears and the scene was filmed successfully.

STAFF PICKS

Il Ladro di Bambini and Il Postino feature beautiful scenes of the seaside of Sicily, reminding me of our spectacular Sicilian villas overlooking the sea.
-Kit Burns, President and Owner

Filmed on the picturesque back streets and narrow alleys of Montmartre, The Red Balloon is one of the most famous short films ever made. A childhood fantasy with appeal for viewers of all ages, it is the story of a lonely French boy and the wondrous red balloon that follows him everywhere.
-Ellen Sinoff, Italian Specialist and Staff Writer

I love Giancarlo Giannini's and Mariangela Melato's performances in Linda Wertmuller's Love and Anarchy, and the setting - Rome in all its beauty and brutality - is brilliantly captured by Wertmuller's direction. But mostly I love the full Italian title: Film d'amore e d'anarchia, ovvero 'stamattina alle 10 in via dei Fiori nella nota casa di tolleranza...which translates to: Film about love and anarchy. Or, rather, this morning at 10 o'clock in Flower Street in the infamous brothel...
-Laura Munich, Italian Specialist

One movie that I enjoyed was Only You, with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. Gorgeous cinematography! The splendor of Italy was shown with lots of beautiful sightseeing and romantic dining under the stars. Magnifico!
-Ceci Chissell, Bookkeeper

Charade, directed by Stanley Donen and starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, is set in Paris, and is perhaps best known for the song of the same name, which was written by Henry Mancini and nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1964. -Lisa Bagnulo, Italian Intern

In Something's Gotta Give, the movie finishes with Jack Nicoloson going to Paris to claim his love back...a true fairytale ending. -Monica Contrisciano, Webmaster & Marketing Coordinator

Anyone who enjoys dance will enjoy watching the stunning performance films of Carlos Saura, especially Flamenco, Carmen and El Amor Brujo. Many of Saura's films star the famous Spanish dancer, Antonio Grades.
-Suzy Davis, Spanish Program Director

Penélope Cruz stars in Pedro Almodóvar's Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother). Antonio Banderas appears in several Almodóvar films, including Mujeres Al Borde de un Ataque Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) and iÁtame! (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!)
-Marta Staples, Spanish Program Manager

REEL TO REAL:

FILMS TO VILLAS

ITALY

Devious Tom Ripley trades his identity for that of playboy Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley. The Beatrice, Balconi, Carino, Pietro One, and Pietro Two apartments are located in a stately palazzo on Piazza Mattei - exactly where Dickie Greenleaf lived in luxury. In the Fellini classic, La Dolce Vita, Anita Ekburg cooled off in the Trevi Fountain. If you don't see all of Rome on your first visit to the Trevi Apartment, with a direct view of the fountain, ensure your return by tossing in a coin.

Cold salads on the patio and long siestas in the afternoon strike a bold contrast with the hard work of restoring a rundown villa in the film, Under the Tuscan Sun, based on Frances Mayes' memoir of the same name. At Canto della Collina, you can enjoy the same ambience without any of the backbreaking restoration work. Overlooking the shores of Lake Trasimeno, the villa has been exquisitely restored to combine traditional rustic style with gracious elegance.

In Enchanted April, four women rent a villa on the Italian Riviera to try to come to grips with their lives and relationships. This gorgeous film offers romance and spectacular scenery. Villa Marina, a luxury villa in Portofino, offers a comparable setting with stunning views and complete privacy. It's an ideal place to ponder whatever is on your mind.

The women in A Room with a View find themselves in Florence, in rooms without views, until some gentlemen remedy the situation. They should have stayed at our elegant Vespucci Apartment, with a wonderful view overlooking the Arno!

There's no place on earth quite like Sicily, which explains why so many memorable films are set there. Mighty Aphrodite and Cinema Paradiso were filmed there, and Il Postino (The Postman) is set on the nearby Aeolian Islands. Explore the wonders of this unique locale from Vistamare, an authentic Sicilian noble estate, or Villa Felice, a five-star property in a community of exclusive villas on the sea.

SPAIN

L'Auberge Espanole (The Spanish Apartment) is the story of an economics student who moves into an apartment full of international students. One of the filming locations is Antoni Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece, Sagrada Familia.

Casa Quixote, located in a classic old building in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, is within a short distance of this important landmark and popular tourist attraction. Belle Époque won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1994. It is the story of a Spanish soldier who deserts the army and is welcomed at a country farm, where he befriends the farmer and falls in love with all four of his beautiful daughters, one of whom is played by Penélope Cruz.

At Finca Ventura, set in the hills of the Costa del Sol, you can experience that same welcoming atmosphere and will fall in love with the magnificent views of the sea, Gibraltar, and North Africa.

FRANCE

Amélie Poulain searches for the meaning of life while interacting with customers at the Paris café where she works. Some of the scenes in Amélie were shot in Montmartre, the same neighborhood where the Junot Apartment is located. The café where Amélie worked, Les 2 Moulins, can be found at the beginning of Rue Lepic, and the produce store Collignon is at 56 Rue Trois Frères.

Manon des Sources (Manon of the Springs) is the story of a beautiful shepardess living in the idyllic Provencal countryside. Villa Près du Lac, just outside of St-Remy-de-Provence, has views of the very mountains where Manon might have lived.

Recipe for Poetic Spaghetti

In Il Postino (The Postman), the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda finds refuge on an Aeolian island off Sicily.

There he meets a romantic young postman who conquers the heart of his beloved with the help of Neruda's advice and poetry.

-1 lb spaghetti

-6 artichokes "dressed like warriors, in pomegranate bronze"

-6 large tomatoes "visceral red"

-2 cloves garlic "precious ivory"

-3 T. extra virgin olive oil

-a few basil leaves

-salt and pepper

Clean the artichokes by removing the hard outer leaves and the "beard" inside. Slice them very finely and cook them in the olive oil until they are very soft.

Peel the tomatoes and dice them. Add them to the artichokes and crush them with the tines of a fork on the bottom of the pan.

Mix, add the basil and the garlic (whole, to be removed before serving), season with salt and pepper, and cook for a few minutes.

Drain the spaghetti, mix in the sauce and serve hot.
