The Appartamento Nobile is favorably located in Venice's Castello district,
a relatively quiet area in the eastern part of the city. A short 6 minutes' walk
from the palazzo leads to St. Mark's Square. Nearby is the Arsenal where the great
ships of the Venetian Empire were built and where one finds the best naval museum
in Italy, the Museo Storico Navale. Here, the history of Italian warships is documented
alongside the more pacific history of the gondola. Heading west along the Riva
degli Schiavoni, one catches a glimpse of the famous Bridge of Sighs before reaching
Piazza San Marco itself.
The extravagant Basilico di San Marco
remains one of Venice's most impressive sights and a climb to the top of the Campanile
is well rewarded with views over the city and the Venetian lagoon and, on a clear
day, as far as the spectacular Dolomite Mountains. Other interesting monuments
in the vicinity include the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, with its Renaissance
fresco cycle illustrating the lives of the patron saints of Dalmatia, and the
art-filled churches of San Giovanni in Bragora, Santi Giovanni e Paolo and San
Zaccaria.
The Appartamento Nobile (3,000 sq. feet) is located on the
second floor of the striking 16th century Palazzo Salvioni, believed to have been
constructed by the prominent Venetian architect Jacopo Sansovino. The palazzo
overlooks and can be entered from the Rio della Pietà, a lovely Venetian "water
street" for those arriving by water taxi or from a passageway from Salizzada dei
Greci. Enter into the impressive grand salon, distinguished by its frescoed 18-foot
ceiling, oriental carpet, original paintings, antiques and a Venetian chandelier.
Charming terrazze Veneziane grace each end of the room, one overlooking
the canal and Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore and the other overlooking the palazzo
garden. The room somehow manages to be not only sumptuous and quintessentially
Venetian, but also comfortable. Doors from this central room lead to each of the
other rooms-a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom with tub, a second twin-bedded
room and a bathroom with shower just across the hall, a cozy study with satellite-TV,
telephone, internet connection and a modern, fully-equipped eat-in kitchen.
The
mezzanine level up one flight offers a spacious double bedroom, bathroom with
shower and small single (Cinderella) room, accessed through the double room. All
the bedrooms are air conditioned. On the ground floor (separate from the apartment)
is a laundry room with washer and dryer.
This apartment can be rented
with the Nobile Garden Studio
to accommodate two additional people.
