Il Foghér is one of several distinctive apartments within the Villa Selvatico,a 16th century
villa located on a lovely estate in the hills of the Veneto. The northeast of
Italy, home to the Veneto region, is a joy to visit both for its distinctive towns
and for its striking variety of landscapes. Though Venice perhaps needs little
introduction, neighboring Padova, Verona and Vicenza are less well known and well
worth exploring. Just a few minutes drive from Selvatico, Padova is notable for
its important works of art, including a fresco cycle by Giotto and a series of
bronze reliefs and other works by Donatello. Nearby Verona-best known as the setting
for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet-does not disappoint in terms of romantic appeal.
Rich in art and interesting monuments, Verona is also a festive city, hosting
Italy's biggest wine fair each April as well as an opera festival every summer
in its extraordinary outdoor Arena. Last of the trio, Vicenza distinguishes itself
as the city where the influential architect Andrea Palladio launched his remarkable
career. Many villas and civic buildings in and around Vicenza exemplify his important
contributions to worldwide architecture.
The beaches of the Adriatic coast
lie a short drive to the east, while Europe's most breathtaking mountains, the
Dolomites, offer skiing and spectacular sightseeing a couple of hours to the north.
For visitors who enjoy sports, facilities for swimming, tennis and golf are all
found within a few kilometers of Selvatico. Guests are also welcome to relax in
the villa's garden or may choose to rent bicycles to explore the environs. The
local village, easily reached on foot, offers restaurants, a grocery, a pharmacy,
a post office and other shops, as well as a bus to Padova. (From Padova the train
runs to Venice and other destinations.) Il Foghér apartment occupies the
ground floor of the Villa Selvatico's west wing and is named for the wonderful,
rustic fireplace found in its living room. Wood-beamed ceilings and attractive
rustic furniture lend much to the apartment's elegant country style. A fully equipped
kitchenette claims one corner of the living area, while another corner is furnished
as a dining area seating six. There are two pleasantly furnished bedrooms-one
with a double bed and one with twins. Two additional guests can be accommodated
on the double sleeper sofa in the living room. There is one bathroom with tub
and shower. The apartment is air-conditioned and provided with color TV and telephone
and boasts ample storage space. |
