Umbria has earned the nickname "the green heart of Italy." Gently rolling hills cover the region, with oak woodlands and
plentiful vineyards and olive groves. Selvamica
sits atop one such hill, affording 360° of splendid views — views best enjoyed from the villa's terraces or pool.
Selvamica's restful
atmosphere is assured by its private location. Reached by a dirt road, the property
is about two miles from the nearest paved road, and is surrounded by vineyards.
(Several good local cantinas sell direct.) Yet every convenience is available
ten minutes away in Orvieto, and there is an outdoor market every Thursday and
Saturday. Even closer, in Orvieto Scalo, is a supermarket that carries staples,
liquor, meat, fish, bread and great deli items (cheese, salamis, roast chickens,
etc). The store is open all day and accepts major credit cards.
Orvieto
boasts a number of other attractions, including the finest Gothic cathedral in Italy,
many enjoyable restaurants and a popular local style of painted pottery. Umbria
offers many engaging possibilities for day trips including Todi, Perugia, Assisi,
Gubbio and Spoleto. For kids, there is an ancient park of
stone monster statues, the Parco dei Mostri, just to the south.
A splendid stone farmhouse complex
in the traditional Umbrian style, Selvamica has been restored both with attention
to its authentic rustic origins and with a modern sense of comfort and convenience.
Sunlight streams into its interiors from many arched windows. Antiques are plentiful but sofas and chairs are modern and comfortable. Each bedroom has a fan; two of the bedrooms will have air-conditioning for 2009. Windows are screened and the villa is outfitted with satellite TV and high-speed Internet access. A "magnet" keeps the mosquitoes away. The pool has a beautiful terrace overlooking the valley below.
Surrounding the house is
a spectacular garden with sunflowers, oleander, jasmine, laurel, roses, and geranium.
There is a vegetable garden and fruit trees (quince, apricot, peach and apple)
and guests are invited to help themselves.
There is an English house manager, who is very helpful in providing
guests with information and making restaurant and museum reservations.
Two separate
residences are available for rental.
The Main House sleeps seven in three double bedrooms, each with adjoining bath, and
one single bedroom. All beds can be made up as twins or as kings. The large living
room and amply stocked library each have a fireplace. There is a fabulous and
beautiful tiled kitchen equipped with absolutely everything including dishwasher,
two refrigerators, a big freezer and a separate dining area. The living and dining
areas open onto a terrace with patio furniture and another terrace is accessible
from the master bedroom suite. A clothes washer is provided.
The West
Wing Apartment sleeps four in two double bedrooms on the upper level. There is
a living room with fireplace, an eat-in kitchen, and two en suite bathrooms. The
apartment has a private entrance and separate heating, hot water facilities and
clothes washer. Guests have access to one of the north terraces and a small lawn
area to the west side of the house.
