Two and three centuries ago, farmers built unusual conical-shaped houses in the Itria Valley of Puglia. About a thousand remain, many of which have been renovated into modern dwellings inside. Outside, they look like something from a fairytale. Built from local stone, the trullo has meter-thick walls to protect against the elements. Outside, the walls are whitewashed and the fitted stone roofs left their natural color. All of the rooms are round, and each room has its own conical roof. Here, where water is rare and one uses water sparingly, the design of a trullo is designed to collect precious rain water into a large underground cistern.
The location, near Martina Franca, is perfect for exploring Puglia and also for taking advantage of splendid beaches (Bari is 70 km; Brindisi is 40 km), with both the Ionian and Adriatic seas in easy reach. Just 30 kilometers away you will find the unspoiled Adriatic sandy beaches, with fresh seafood restaurants, scuba diving and boating. Regional airports are found at Bari and Brindisi, or you can take a ferry to visit Greece.
A small grocery store is within walking distance (800 meters), and the lovely white hill town of Cisternino is six kilometers away. The ares is known for its local country festivals, jazz festivals, fresh produce, art, churches, castles, pottery, gastronomy, wines and most of all, for its open, friendly people. Weather is mild and water
is scarce (good news for sun-seekers, as there are few rainy days). The landscape
is divided by ancient stone walls into fields of wheat, olive trees, and vineyards,
while oleander and poppies line the roads. The air is fresh and the atmosphere
is one of ancient welcome.
Trullo Bianco has been restored over the last
five years into a comfortable vacation home. There are four bedrooms:
- 1 double (in the Trullo)
- 2 twin bedded rooms (in the Lamia)
- 1 room with 2 bunk beds; sleeps 4 children (in the Lamia)
There are three bathrooms (two with tub, one with shower). Bedrooms have twin beds that can be made up together or separately. There is a living room, dining room and laundry with washing machine and drying line. The kitchen is very well-equipped and furnished with attractive handmade local ceramic dishes. Amenities include telephone and fireplace. Here, you can live outdoors much of the year, and the property offers a large terrace with pergola and a nice-sized swimming pool, and is surrounded on three sides by a wall and on one side by an open field, so it is quite private. The garden is planted with flowers, vegetables (fresh artichokes!), herbs and climbing jasmine. Help yourself while you are a guest here.
