This beautiful cottage is located half way between Recanati and Porto Recanati,
towns that are ½ hour apart, making it an easy 15 minutes to either for shopping
or for enjoying the lovely beaches at Porto Recanati. Recanati is a medieval hill
town famous to all Italians as the birthplace of Giacomo Leopardi, considered
by some as their most famous poet after Dante. This charming town has lovely restaurants
and shops offering food and products typical of the Marche region. Porto
Recanati is a beach resort and is a favorite place for Italians to vacation in
August. This spot is convenient for enjoying the Adriatic coast and all of the
major sites of interest in the Marche region. The area is yet to be discovered
by American tourists, but it could very well be the next Tuscany with its hilly
landscape, patchwork of fields and ancient hill towns with notable art. Towns
to visit include Ancona, Urbino, Pesaro, Fermo, Ascoli Piceno, S. Benedetto del
Tronto and Loreto. Rome is about 3 hours to the southwest across the mountains,
Umbria is to the west and Ravenna is about 2 hours up the coast. Nearby towns
in Umbria include Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia.
The cottage lI Refugio is set on a hill in 2 ½ acres of olive
trees and is surrounded by a garden. It has an unforgettable 360
degree view. First, there are snow-capped mountains, then the
ancient medieval town and finally the mountains dropping directly
into a wide expanse of blue Adriatic Sea as far as you can see.
In front of the little
house is a terrace with table and chairs, pots with flowers, and olive trees.
Garden plots grow wild strawberries and there is an almond tree; guests can help
themselves in July! An ancient door leads into the large room with white walls,
arches, ancient polished large brick floor and a beautiful picture window at one
end. At the other end is a fully-fitted kitchen with stove and refrigerator and
a marble bathroom with shower, bidet, sink and WC, completely modern and spotlessly
clean. The large living area has sofas and tables and two lovely fireplaces to
provide heat in spring and fall. The furnishing, done with care, has been
completed with antiques and original art. The windows are screened. Here you will
find peace and tranquility, a chance to breathe pure air and see the ever-changing
vista, disturbed only by birdsong.
