Many famous Italian artists were born in the Marche region. Raphael was born in Urbino, a town famous for its university and its Ducal Palace. The great poet Giacomo Leopardi was born in Recanati, and the composer Gioacchino Rossini was born in Pesaro. It is possible to visit these great artists’ homes. Ascoli Piceno has a wonderful main square, center of the residents’ life. Marche is also an unspoiled region famous for its beaches and for its local food specialties, such as stuffed olives, porchetta (roasted pig), Fabriano salami, and the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Piceno red wines.
