Nestled in the hills near a tiny medieval village along the Lazio-Umbria border, il Gallinaio is a delightful cottage offering accommodations for four. Peaceful garden grounds surround the cottage. Nearby are a pool and tennis court to be shared with guests of Villa Castello, the large palazzo up the hill. The village itself is quiet, with only a single bar and grocery store, but interesting attractions are found nearby, including Etruscan sites, a Roman amphitheatre and the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The town of Viterbo, once a favored retreat of Roman popes, is worth a visit for its fine medieval squares and picturesque pedestrian quarter.

Another local treasure is the Villa Lante, known for its Renaissance gardens rivaling any in Europe. The nature preserve at nearby Lago di Vico will appeal to lovers of nature; and no one should miss the Parco dei Mostri (monster park) at Bomarzo, where fantastical creatures of stone are found around every turn. Driving northward a few kilometers into Umbria one discovers Orvieto (best known for its stunning Gothic Duomo and its delightful white wine), the dramatically positioned hillside village of Todi, and the popular town of Spoleto, home of a famous international arts festival.

At the heart of il Gallinaio is a comfortable living room featuring a cathedral-style raised beam ceiling, terracotta floors, fireplace and large windows offering beautiful views of the countryside. Furnished with simple elegance and taste, this well-lit room also includes a comfortable dining area. The beamed ceilings and tasteful décor are echoed throughout the rest of the house, which includes a charming and well-equipped kitchen with a breakfast area (opening on the veranda and garden) and two attractive bedrooms-a master bedroom with queen bed and en suite bathroom and a twin-bedded room. There are two additional bathrooms and a laundry room..

The cottage is centrally heated, equipped with a dishwasher and washing machine, and furnished with TV and telephone. Lawn furniture is provided for lounging on the grounds and there is a private parking area.
