Before the papacy was moved to Rome in the 14th century, Avignon was the great
city of the popes. The charming medieval village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, just
across the Rhône, was the residence of cardinals. The village is known for its
local Thursday market and its antiques market on Saturday. This location is ideal
for exploring the beautiful towns and villages of Provence. Avignon is just 10
minutes away. Aix-en-Provence, home of Cézanne, is within easy day trip distance,
as well as Arles, Lacoste, Ménerbes, Gordes, Rousillon, and La Fontaine du Vaucluse.
