Villeneuve-les-Avignon is a charming medieval village just across the
Rhône from Avignon, reputedly favored by cardinals during the latter city's
14th-century era as the seat of the papacy. Vestiges of this unique history
are easily discovered throughout Villeneuve, which today also offers charming shops
and a fine Provençal market. From your home base, enjoy day trips to artistic
and historic Avignon. Named "City of Arts," its celebrated monuments have
recently been listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. Must-sees include
the Palais des Papes, the Papal Palace and the Pope's residence during the 14th century, considered one of the most important gothic palaces in Europe. Stroll on the Saint Bénezet Bridge, the Pont d'Avignon stretching part way across
the Rhône River. Walk the city walls and quaint alleys or explore
shops and cafes that are abundant in this thriving city.
Villeneuve-les-Avignon is ideally located within easy reach of the beautiful towns and
villages of Provence. Daytrip possibilities include Aix en
Provence, Cézanne's hometown, colorful Arles, favored by Vincent Van Gogh,
Lacoste, Ménerbes, the corner of Provence often known as Peter Mayle's country
(author of A Year in Provence), Gordes, Roussillon, and La Fontaine du Vaucluse.
