Villefranche-sur-Mer is a delightful coastal town about half-way between Nice
and Monte Carlo. The highlight of Villefranche is its beautiful natural harbor,
enlivened by Italian-style palazzi and colorful bars, cafés and restaurants. Steep
lanes lead up from the harbor through the vieille ville, or old city, where visitors
can explore a sixteenth century citadel-presently home to galleries displaying
works by Miró, Picasso, and other artists. Alternately, one might follow the footpath
out onto the peninsula Cap Ferrat, where celebrities such as Edith Piaf and Charlie
Chaplin made their homes. Of the many lavish private villas found here, one of
the most impressive is open to the public as a museum-the Musée Ephrussi de Rothschild,
which also boasts one of the most beautiful gardens in Provence. Another of Cap
Ferrat's estates has been turned into a unique zoo, where chimps take part in
tea parties. An ideal way to explore the coastline is to take a drive along one
of three corniches, or coastal roads. The lowest of the three stops in each town
along the way, while the middle road is famous for stunning views and the highest
is perfect for picnics.
La Maison Rose is cozy 100 year-old renovated
cottage set at the end of a quiet private road on a lush green hillside. A stairway
five minutes from the house leads directly into Villefranche, and a 15-minute
walk finds one at the beach. The cottage's interiors are colorfully decorated
in a modern Provençal style. One enters into a living room with a corner
dining area. The living room is equipped with satellite TV and VCR and has two beds in the corner that can accomodate two people. Two more sleep in an attractive twin bedroom,
with a generous-sized closet. Also, guests will enjoy a compact kitchen, fully
equipped including dishwasher and microwave. The elegant bathroom is equipped
with two sinks and a shower, and a separate laundry room includes washer and dryer.
A phone is available. The cottage is air-conditioned and has a private parking
space- luxuries for any residence in a coastal town on the French Riviera! |
