Walking on Roses in Sardinia

KIDS PICK

grottoSardinia has a lot of attractions to keep kids happy, especially the beaches. Children will love the water sports and the beautiful, clear blue sea. Torresalinas is ideal for children with its shallow waters. Snorkle in crystal clear water, or go horseback riding on country trails or on the beach. Spend the day splashing at a water park, or rent a boat and go sailing.

Children love caves, so don't miss Neptune’s Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno), near Alghero. This sea-level cave uses dramatic lighting to showcase its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. These marine caves are located west of the town and can be reached by car, by boat (departing hourly during the summer), or by descending 656 steps carved into the cliffside and known as Escala del Cabirol or ‘goat steps.’

The food of Sardinia is child-friendly because of the simple cooking style. Enjoy the ancient Sardinian technique of a traditional spit roast. A large hole is dug and lined with mirto (myrtle) bushes and the food is baked in the ground. Or dine on the beach at the harbor of Marina Picola.

Sardinia is rich in history, with exhibits from the Bronze Age through Roman and Byzantine ruins, churches and museums.

But for any child, the highlight of a trip to Sardinia is likely to be the "nuraghi," ancient, huge stone towers that are truly awesome!
