Stay a week or a month at the Old Grist Mill, your home in the heart of Provence. Visit ancient castles and explore towns and villages whose roots go back for thousands of years. See the countryside painted by Van Gogh and Cézanne, all within easy driving distance. History is alive in Provence, and the weather is said to be the best in France. The property is twelve acres of peace and quiet, just a few minutes' walk from the ancient village of Noves, with restaurants, bakeries, groceries, bank, and post office. There is a TGV station in Avignon, just eight miles away. In three hours, you'll arrive in Paris. The Marseille airport is 45 miles south. All the important sites are within 40 miles, so days trips are easy to Avignon, Arles, Nîmes, Aix-en-Provence, the national park of the Luberon and its typical hill villages, Les Alpilles and St-Rémy, Les-Baux-de-Provence, and the Pont du Gard. Beaches are less than an hour away to the south and nearby are many sites for hiking, canoeing, and rock climbing. There is also tennis (1 mile away), horseback riding (2 miles away) or golf (5 miles away).

The Grounds

A wide open area is perfect for children to play. The large swimming pool (50 ft. x 25 ft.), with large terrace and pool house with dressing room, shower and WC, is positioned to take full advantage of the sun and far enough away from the buildings to avoid disturbing those who would rather rest or read. (The swimming pool is open from early April until late November.) There is also a parking area, and a trampoline (12 ft.), ping-pong, fishing, and walking on site provide plenty of activities for families. Each accommodation has its own furnished patio, with BBQ, tables and chairs, and a large canvas umbrella. A path within the property leads to the crest of a rock cliff with outstanding views over Noves and 350 acres of protected pine forest.

The Mill

The Old Grist Mill was a flour mill, set at the foot of a cliff and next to the fast-flowing River Anguillon that powered the mill for over 300 years. The machinery of the mill is still in place and, as a guest, you are invited to visit and learn how flour was made here and how each building was used. There were kilns for tile production and a lime furnace. In 1962, the mill closed. The miller's house and the old mill have been converted into spacious apartments and houses, all comfortably furnished and ready for guests. In addition, there area several apartments that are not listed on our site, but that can be rented for groups larger than 30. Guests of the apartments will share the pool with guests in the houses. Two large rooms are available for groups renting the entire place to use for seminars, workshops, dinners or painting.

LA TULERIE
(old tile works; sleeps 8; 1400 sq. ft/130 sq. m)

The traditional 17th-century tile works (tuilerie) was built along the hillside (la roque). Its two tile kilns stayed active until the 19th century, producing traditional Roman tiles. The kilns are still visible and are located at the base of this cottage, which will give you a taste of the Provençal art de vivre. A beautiful curved staircase with custom ironwork leads to a cozy living room with fireplace on the upper level, with a TV and private phone; it is nicely secluded from the rest of the house for children to play, or if you want to get away to read or relax. On the middle level is a large dining area with an antique oak table that opens onto a spacious, fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and a private terrace (faces south) with teak furniture and BBQ/outdoor fireplace. Also on this level are two charming bedrooms decorated with colorful Provencal fabrics, a full bathroom with shower and washing machine, and a separate toilet room. Each bedroom is equipped with a private sink, hidden by a Provencal curtain. You enter the first floor through a lovely curved antique door, a signature of the estate. A beautiful staircase with custom ironwork leads you to the next floor on the right. On the left are two bedrooms, each decorated in typical Provencal style. Each room includes a wash basin, and there is a full bathroom with tub/shower and separate toilet room.

LA BERGERIE (sleeps 7; 1200 sq. ft/110 sq. m)
This 18th-century building, once a sheep pen, has been artfully restored to a charming cottage. Shade trees and Provencal green shutters give a real feeling of the South of France. Facing the gardens on two sides, the house has wonderful views from every window. Entering from the east garden, you find a spacious but cozy living area, with a fireplace built into a natural stone arc, and a TV and telephone. A bar separates the large dining area with antique oak table and a French window with a nice view of the south garden. A charming, fully equipped kitchen is complete with dishwasher, microwave, and washing machine, leading to the private terrace with teak furniture, arbor and BBQ. On the second floor are three comfortable bedrooms, all decorated in traditional Provençal style. Two of the bedrooms contain two twin beds while the third bedroom contains three twin beds. One bedroom has its own shower. There is one full bath on this floor (tub/shower) and a separate toilet room.

LA MAISON DU MEUNIER
(sleeps 5; 900 sq. ft/85 sq. m)
This adorable 19th-century cottage was home to the head miller, who was responsible for all the activities of running the Old Grist Mill. Perfect for a small family, romantic couple, or traveling friends, La Maison du Meunier is separate from the cottages, with a nice view of the estate, the stream behind it, and the southern gardens. Enter through a delightful arbor, where a covered stone terrace is furnished with BBQ and teak furniture. An adjacent parking area allows an additional entrance into a wonderfully cozy living area with a fireplace, TV and telephone. An eat-in kitchen has a wonderful ambiance and is fully equipped. Tile floors and counters add to the charm. Upstairs are two bedrooms (one with two twin beds, one with three twin beds), a full bath with tub/shower, wash basin and washing machine, as well as a separate room for the toilet. Open the windows to hear the flowing stream as you sleep. This house is warm, cozy, and a true piece of Provençal paradise.

LES CIGALES (sleeps 10; 1600 sq.ft/150 sq. m)
This 19th-century barn was originally used to store wheat for the mill. Now a charming house, Les Cigales offers a beautiful panoramic view of the estate and is a great gathering spot for groups or families as it has a large living area, dining area with a large oak table, and kitchen. Enter the comfortable living room from a charming stone terrace, complete with BBQ and teak furniture. This spacious living area includes a TV, telephone, and a cozy fireplace. It is open to both the dining area and the fully equipped Provençal kitchen, with dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. On the first floor, there are three bedrooms each with twin beds and separate wash basins, one with a small shower. There is a separate toilet room and a full bathroom with tub, shower and wash basin just down the hall from the dining area. Upstairs are two large bedrooms, each with two twin beds and wash basins, one full bathroom with shower/tub and wash basin, and a separate toilet room.

The Old Grist Mill is perfect for families and groups! Please inquire about availability and prices for any of the extra apartments if your group overflows the four houses. The extra apartments that are on request could sleep a total of an additional 17 people. Fortunately the grounds and pool are spacious and guests never need feel crowded.
