Villefranche is one of the most charming and authentic towns on the Côte d’Azur. Nestled on the shores of the Bay of Villefranche, just minutes from Nice and Monaco, Villefranche remains an authentic French fishing village with a wonderful local culture — yet it also attracts a very interesting international group of visitors and residents, including students attending the renowned French language school located there.
La Cloche is located in the heart of Villefranche, on the top floor of one of the oldest buildings in the old town. The entrance to the building leads up a stairwell to the front door of the apartment. A second stairwell is interior to the apartment. At the top of the stairs, you enter the main room, a spacious open plan living/dining area and kitchen with cathedral ceilings, old wooden beams, and exposed stone walls that date back over 600 years. From this room, you can see over rooftops to the beautiful blue sea, and the room is filled with light as it receives sun all day long and has four large skylights. The décor is very comfortable, with a rustic provencal style that complements the ancient beams and stone walls.
A comfortable sofa bed in the sitting area opens into a queen-sized bed to accommodate additional guests. The dining area features an antique oak table with comfortable chairs on one side and a bench with a daybed on the other (the perfect place to curl up in the sun and enjoy the view). The charming provencal kitchen has been designed for the gourmet cook, with gas stove, dishwasher and granite countertops.
The main room leads to a hallway with a built-in office with wireless DSL and phone line on one side, and a half bathroom on the other. This bathroom has a toilet, sink, and washing machine, but guests using the sofa bed need to share the shower/tub of the master bedroom. There is a small guest or coat closet, and a skylight over the hall provides lovely light as well as a view through to the back of the apartment.
The bedroom has a high quality queen-sized bed with lovely linens, two bedside tables with reading lights, a French window overlooking a charming pedestrian street, a large closet and a storage closet for luggage. The main bathroom is en suite, with a tub/shower, a mirrored cabinet with plenty of storage, and an enclosed toilet room. A window looks out on the same charming pedestrian street as the bedroom.
Throughout the apartment there is lovely lighting, all on dimmer switches to allow you to create just the right ambience — romantic in the evening or bright light for reading. Artwork from local artists is combined with paintings from around the world. Antiques compliment more modern pieces. Although La Cloche does not have a balcony, the charming windows have a large built-in window seat with a view of the terracotta rooftops descending to the sea, the beautiful bay and Cap Ferrat. During the day, the apartment is filled with light and color. At night, the soft lighting of the old town and the lights of the villas of Cap Ferrat provide an unforgettable view.
The location, in the heart of the old town, is extremely convenient and very quiet in the evenings. However, please be aware that from 7 am until 9 pm, church bells ring on the hour and half hour. Most people find this charming, and the bedroom is located in the back of the apartment, away from the bells, but you will surely hear them, especially in summer when the windows are open.
La Cloche is in the same building and can be rented together with Le Balcon.
